Sport in the era of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): hunting and running


We will be talking about hunting and running.


Although hunting is not actually a sport from the perspective of Islam, due to the fact that in Islam is forbidden to hunt just for fun, at the same time destroying the animals, hunting is considered permissible physical activity, since in this case the hunter first set a target lawful manner get game, which will be used as food. And indeed in the second verse of Sura Maida said about the permissibility of hunting in all seasons, except the season of Hajj, when the pilgrim performing Hajj, "When you have completed the Hajj, you can hunt". All the details of the hunting companions of the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) learned from the prophet. In some areas, hunted wild ass, the number of which was quite large. However,  the family of the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade eating donkey meat. On the other hand, in lakes and ponds, which were in the vicinity of Medina, a lot of fish were caught. In addition, during one of the campaigns, when there was a shortage of food, the travelers ate the meat of dead whale on the shore.


Running is one of the sports that existed during the century of prosperity. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) allowed Salaam ibn Ekva and one Ansar to participate in the competition on the run to the medina. During one of the campaigns the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his wife Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) left behind and decided to run a race with her. In this competition, Aisha won. A few years later they repeated this competition, where this time won the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "This was a rematch for the previous victory: "It is also reported that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was good runner.

Required certain conditions to be considered a valid sports and entertainment. For example, should not be neglected namaz and worship.

In the following verse of the Quran gambling is prohibited, and lists the wisdom of the ban: "O ye who believe! intoxicants [khamr] and gambling (dedication of) stones [maysir] and (divination by) arrows are an abomination [rijs] of Satan's handiwork: eschew such (abomination) that ye may prosper. 91 Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants [khamr] and gambling [maysir] and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer: will ye not then abstain?"  (The Quran, 5:90)

Lotto, lotteries, sweepstakes, and similar games are gambling, regardless of who these games organized. The fact that these games are benefiting charitable organizations, from the point of view of Islam is no excuse to legitimize the game. Therefore, any sports games should not turn into gambling. The image of sport, which develops the body and mind of a person is more suitable formula for the sport.

The transition to a modern sports are research and development, which were supported by the industrial revolution. Sports such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, like a new product, developed similarly demanded products in the market. Capitalist enterprise has played an important role in the modernization of the sport as a competitive product. Universities and schools also contributed, which have transformed traditional games in modern sports.
