Was polygamy permitted for the previous prophets (peace be upon them all)?

Question: Why according to Shariah of our Prophet (peace be upon him) men can have 4 wives, but according to Shariah of prophet Isa (peace be upon him) men could have only one wife, as far as I know. What can you tell about it? (Irina)

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

To the best of my knowledge, the original Shari’ah of Eesa (Alaihis Salaam) does not prohibit polygamy. Also, if we have to look at previous Shari’ahs like the Shari’ah of Ebrahim, Dawood and Ya’qoob  (Alaihimus Salaam), polygamy was allowed and practiced.

Nevertheless, whether it was allowed in previous Shari’ahs or not is not the matter. The important thing is that it is allowed in Islam with certain conditions and there is wisdom in every law of Allah, whether we comprehend it or not.

To go into the wisdoms of polygamy would require a detailed article. Nevertheless, it is sufficient for a Muslim to know that there definitely is great wisdom in every law of Allah and Allah is Most Just, Most Compassionate and Most Wise.

And Allah Knows Best.
