Question: One Muslim brother tells me that there is a fast of Dawud (David). And the other says that it is bid'ah, we just three of us walked together after football. I have heard myself something about this fasting. Is there dalil about this fast? Is it complicated, what are its main features? (Auburn)
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh!
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious to all in this world and in the next world only the Merciful to the believers.
This is not bid'ah, many believe innovation of what they did not have heard or read. Truly, now people know little, but a lot of talk. Yes, this is a complicated fasting. The complexity of it is that Dawud (alayhi salaam) fasted every other day. Truly, it is very complicated but effective against our nafs (passions). Narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin Asa (radyyallahu anhuma) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The most beloved fast according to Allah is the fast of Dawud (Prophet David Peace be upon him); he would fast every alternate day". (Muslim, Syyam 35, № 2734)
And Allah knows best.
