Question: Recently my mother died. I am very upset by this event. A few days ago I heard her voice (I don’t know - in a dream or in reality), she was telling me that she feels the torment in the grave. I try to make optional prayers (Nafl-Salah) and give her a reward for them, I give alms (sadakah) for her. What else can I do? (Anonim)
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh
I express my heartfelt condolences to you on the loss of your beloved mother. May Allah make it easy for you and your family to cope with this loss and may He pardon your mother and grant her high stages in Jannah. Amin.
Undoubtedly, the dream that you have seen about your mother is disturbing. However, you should know that Allah is the Most Merciful and has granted us the opportunity of benefitting our parents even after they have passed away. From the Hadith, it is understood that doing good deeds on behalf of the deceased will benefit them in the grave.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) reports that the Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:
إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عنه عمله إلا من ثلاثة إلا من صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
When a person passes away, then all his actions cease except for three: a) Sadaqah Jaariyah*, b) Knowledge which he imparted and is now being benefitted from or a pious child who will make Dua for him (Sahih Muslim, Hadith #: 1631)
Thus, you should continue performing Nafl prayers, doing good actions on behalf of your mother and giving alms on her behalf as well. Also continue making Dua to Allah to forgive her. The benefits of these good deeds will definitely reach your mother Insha Allah. As long as your mother passed away as a Muslim, there is still hope for her and good deeds will definitely benefit her and will draw Allah’s mercy towards her.
* Sadaqah Jaariyah refers to charity due to which a person accrues rewards continuously although that charity was only contributed once. For example, a person digs a well or borehole or contributes in some way to it materializing or plants a tree or distributes Islamic literature etc. As long as people continue deriving benefit from these, the person who contributed will continue reaping the rewards even after he has passed away.
And Allah Knows Best.
