Question: From what age can we marry our daughters according to Shariah? (Anonim)
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh
There is no fixed age that the Shari’ah has stipulated for marriage. The suitable age of marriage will differ from person to person.
In the Hadith, it is encouraged that when one’s children reach the age of maturity, they should be married. Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed and Ibn Abbaas (Radiyallahu Anhuma) report that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:
من ولد له ولد فليحسن اسمه وأدبه، فإذا بلغ فليزوجه
“Whoever has a child should give the child a good name and teach him good manners. When he reaches the age of puberty, then he should get him married”
(Shu’abul Iman by Bayhaqi, Hadith #: 8299)
From this Hadith, we understand that when a person’s children are physically ready for marriage, they should be married. It is also important that the children be mentally prepared for marriage and they understand the importance of marriage as well as the important components of making a marriage work. Together with this, it is also of paramount importance that they understand the basic laws of marriage and divorce. There is no sense in getting them married when they are not mentally prepared for marriage, or are ignorant of the laws of marriage and divorce.
When one senses that his daughter or son is ready for marriage, physically and mentally, then he should not delay in finding a suitable marriage partner for his child. When such a partner is found and both the parents and the girl and boy are happy with each other, they should be married.
And Allah Knows Best.
