Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

There is no prohibition against making Dua (praying) for non-Muslims. The Prophet of Allah (SallallahuAlaihiWasallam) used to pray a lot for his non-Muslim relatives that Allah guides them to the correct path, the path of Islam. You also should practice on this and continue making Dua that Allah guides your parents to Islam. This is the most important prayer you can make for them.

It is also permissible to pray for their well-being and their health, and there is no prohibition for this in the Qur’an and Hadith.

Yes, what is prohibited to is ask Allah to pardon relatives who have passed away in the state of Kufr (disbelief) in Allah.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوا أُولِي قُرْبَى مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ

“It is not (permissible) for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the Mushriks (polytheists), even if they are kinsmen, after it became clear to them that they are the people of hell” (Qur’an, 9: 133)

This verse was revealed after the Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa sallam) tried to convince his most beloved uncle to accept Islam at the time of his death. Unfortunately, his uncle did not accept the message of Islam and passed away on the religion of his forefathers. This grieved the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa sallam) very much and he said:

لأستغفرن لك ما لم أنه عنك

“I will continue asking Allah to forgive you, as long as I am not prohibited from it”

Thereafter, Allah revealed this verse, prohibiting the seeking of forgiveness on behalf of those who have rejected the message of Islam. (Tafsir ibn Kathir)

Whilst your parents are still alive, value this opportunity and try to encourage them to Islam by showing them kindness, the true good character that a Muslim should always adorn himself/herself with and with kind words. Also continue making Dua that Allah guides them to Islam.

May Allah make it easy for you and guide your parents to Islam. Amin!

And Allah Knows Best.

Wassalaam.
