Question: I have a question. Is it possible for a Muslim to wear clothes and shoes made of pig skin? I spent the whole year wearing a leather jacket, then I was told that my jacket made of pig skin, then I asked to myself: "Is it allowed? Can I I wear shoes made of pig skin?
Respected Brother/Sister in Islam
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh
It is not permissible to wear clothes or shoes made of pig skin. The pig is impure in its entirety. The Qur’an has mentioned it to be filth and impure:
أَوْ لَحْمَ خِنْزِيرٍ فَإِنَّهُ رِجْسٌ
“…or flesh of swine – for it is filth” (Qur’an, 6: 145)
Allamah Samarqandi (Rahimahullah) has stated in his book “Tuhfatul Fuqahaa’”:
وأما الخنزير فيروى عن أبي حنيفة أنه نجس العين فيحرم استعمال شعره وسائر أجزائه
“Regarding the pig, it is reported from Imam Abu Hanifah (Rahimahullah) that it is impure in its entirety. Thus, to use its hair or any part of it is prohibited”
(Tuhfatul Fuqahaa, Vol: 1, Pg: 52)
And Allah Knows Best.
